Germany’s Dental Industry to be Guest of Honour at AEEDC Dubai 2024
AEEDC Dubai is ‘The Largest Annual Scientific Dental Conference and Exhibition in the World’

Dubai, UAE – 3 October 2023: The global dental and oral health industry is set to make an extraordinary impact this coming year as it was announced that Germany’s Dental Industry will be the Guest of Honour at next year’s 28th edition of the annual International Dental Conference and Arab Dental Exhibition – AEEDC Dubai 2024.

The announcement was made on the sidelines of the International Dental Show (IDS), the leading global event for the dental community – which ensures sustainable success as a platform for innovation and market trends, between the Association of the German Dental Industry (VDDI) and INDEX Conferences and Exhibitions, the organizers of the annual event AEEDC Dubai.
“I am very honored about this initiative, which will give the manufacturers of the German Dental Industry the opportunity to tighten their contacts and business activities in this important regional target market and to be able to further expand them in many places. The VDDI has always been happy to support the AEEDC in Dubai for decades. This is a new milestone in our friendly cooperation” stated Mark Stephen Pace, Chairman of the Board of the Association of the German Dental Industry (VDDI). “I am very thankful for the tremendous support of our German Government represented the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the of the AUMA – Association of the German Trade Fair Industry,” he added.
The news was received with positive response as AEEDC Dubai is known as ‘The Largest Annual Scientific Dental Conference and Exhibition in the World’ where more than 66,000 people from 155 countries attend. Last year alone showcased more than 4,800 brands from over 3,600 companies, and the 2024 edition is set to expand by nearly 30%.

Eng. Anas Al Madani, Vice Chairman and Group CEO of INDEX Holding, stated: “Germany has had a long-standing position within AEEDC Dubai as major contributors for innovative technology and enhanced treatments methods. We appreciate the valuable contributions they have made over the years and we are delighted to have them as our Guest of Honour of AEEDC Dubai 2024.”
AEEDC Dubai connects dental and oral care companies, manufacturers, and distributors from around the world to reach new business markets and increase their networks. Having Germany’s Dental Industry as the Guest of Honour will further support German products to increase their market share and introduce new products to the world. The Guest of Honour position will place a major spotlight on German brands and products at AEEDC Dubai and highlight them throughout the exhibition for attendees to be aware of their contributions to the global dental industry which spans for more than 100 years.
Germany’s Dental Industry is known for their high-quality products as their turnover has increased by more than 28% to over 6.2 billion euros, where export markets have contributed significantly to this with a total of 4.1 billion euros, and expected to increase steadily over the next year.

About VDDI
Association of the German Dental Industry (VDDI) is part of a worldwide expanding healthcare market and holds a leading position within the international dental industry. VDDI’s business activities include more than 60,000 products in the field of fixtures and fittings, instruments, appliances, and materials, covering the complete spectrum of dentistry from diagnostics through preventive medicine to final restoration.

About AEEDC Dubai
AEEDC Dubai is an annual international three-day conference and exhibition specialized in dentistry which brings together oral health practitioners and producers from around the world, showcases the latest innovative technology and provides companies in the industry an opportunity to forge long-term deals and joint investments to serve the needs of local, regional, and international markets.

https://www.saudident.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/future_dentistry.mp4

The field of dentistry is constantly evolving, and new technologies are being developed all the time. As a dentist, it is important to stay up-to-date on the latest trends so that you can provide your patients with the best possible care.

Here are a few of the most exciting new dental technologies that you should be aware of:

Laser dentistry. Lasers are being used in dentistry for a variety of procedures, including tooth whitening, filling cavities, and gum surgery. Lasers offer a number of advantages over traditional methods, such as less pain, less bleeding, and faster healing.

3D printing. 3D printers are being used to create custom-made dental restorations, such as crowns, bridges, and dentures. 3D printing allows dentists to create restorations that are perfectly fitted to each patient’s individual mouth, which can improve comfort and reduce the risk of complications.

Artificial intelligence (AI). AI is being used in dentistry to develop new diagnostic tools and treatment planning software. AI can help dentists to identify problems early on and develop treatment plans that are tailored to each patient’s individual needs.

Teledentistry. Teledentistry is the use of technology to provide dental care remotely. Teledentistry allows dentists to consult with patients who live in rural areas or who have difficulty traveling to a dentist’s office. Teledentistry can also be used to provide preventive care, such as oral cancer screenings.

These are just a few of the new dental technologies that are changing the way we practice dentistry. As these technologies continue to develop, we can expect to see even more innovative and effective ways to improve oral health.

If you are interested in learning more about these new technologies, I encourage you to attend a continuing education course or to speak with a dental equipment supplier. The future of dentistry is bright, and I am excited to see what the future holds.

Because Dentistry is Not Only about Teeth

By: Dr. Weam Banjar, BDS., MS in clinical research

Research had proven the interaction between oral/ dental and systemic health. However, many still consider dental care a luxury. Despite proven relationship between dental/ oral health and pregnancy outcomes, obstetric gynecologist rarely refer pregnant women to dentists for evaluation and care. Similar observation had been noted for internist and surgeons.

Pain is the primary motive for individual to seek dental care. Afterward, the systemic conditions are often improved. Thus, dental evaluation should be considered as a pivotal component for general health assessment. The holistic approach to health should be adopted, and the culture of multidisciplinary evidence based care should be adopted. Many dental conditions start as a low-grade painless progressive diseases. Yet, based on remote infection theory, oral/dental inflammation may trigger inflammatory immune response that may affect any body organ. Understanding the mechanism of action based on remote infection theory should help improve the quality of medical schools curriculum. Students’ training based on acknowledgement of the role of dental/ oral health would produce a generation of physicians whom are aware of factors that may improve the prognosis of their patients conditions previously were not considered. Not only physical health could be affected by the oral/ dental health. Evidence suggested strong association between oral/ dental health and individual psychological wellbeing. Cosmetic and function dental therapeutic may produce the best outcome if supported with appropriate psychological care. Nevertheless, many psychological disorders are linked to dental/oral presentation.

A holistic approach to establish multidisciplinary evidence-based health care should be considered by policy makers in order to improve the quality of care. Comprehensive/dental examination should be included into basic physical exam to establish a panoramic overview for the overall individual health. Medical schools may benefit from dental schools experience in teaching joint classes to introduce medical students to fundamentals of dentistry.

In a previous post, I talked about the steps needed to start making your first CV. By the end of this post, I hope that you’ll have a CV that sheds the best light on your achievements.

We talked about creating an outline and preparing the layout, not would be adding the actual content. It goes without saying that you should not include any false information in your CV. You should also avoid over-inflating things as that will make you look fake and untrustworthy.

STEP 3 (CONTENT)

Once you have your layout ready, you should be able to start filling in the content. I like to re-type the information from the outline rather than copying and pasting. It’s a tip I learned from bullet journaling (http://bulletjournal.com). When you re-write something, it forces you to rethink it so it gives you a chance to revise the wording and also to reconsider if that point is worth it or not.

The first part of the CV would be “The Header”. This where your name (make it big and clear), contact information (address, phone number (put the country code), email (make sure you have a professional looking email) would go. There is no need to type Curriculum Vitae in this section as it would be obvious what the document is by looking at it and why do you want to put that in focus instead of your name?

Other personal information can also be included in the CV but keep in mind that in some places, they do not recommend it as it can lead to bias. You can include a photograph, nationality, date of birth, place of birth, gender, marital status, number of children, languages…etc

The next section is the “Personal Statement”. This is usually a brief paragraph outlining your profile and why you are submitting this CV. It is not needed if you are submitting your CV for a specific position or as part of a package that includes a cover letter and a statement of purpose.

The following sections can be ordered in different ways. It’s important to keep your strong points in higher ranks so that they are more obvious. For a new grad without much experience, “Education” would be next. This is started in reverse-chronological order (newest first). You can include your GPA here and any honors or awards you received or you can have those in a separate section.

Experience can be sub-classified into multiple sections (clinical, research, teaching, extracurricular…etc). They do not need to be in a specific order and they do not need to be subsequent (e.g. You can put research experience and then follow it with publications.).

For “Clinical Experience”, it is a good idea to expand a bit. We are all required to do internship in Saudi Arabia but how you do your internship is what makes you different from others. Put in the duration and location of each rotation, what specialities you were exposed to and what was your role. For example,

July 2017 – Nov 2017

So-and-so Hospital

Provided routine and emergency dental treatment to patients attending the restorative dentistry and endodontics clinics.

In the “Research Experience” section, mention the projects you have worked on. Include the title of the project, the PI and if you are applying to a research/academic position, you might want to include some info about your role in the project (e.g. assisted in subject recruitment, data collection and analysis…etc). It might be tempting to include every single project you worked on but you do want to be careful with this. A) Be prepared to be asked to elaborate in interviews so you need to know the project really well. B) If you are applying to a specific speciality (ortho for example) and your projects don’t have a defined pattern (some endo, some perio, some pros), this might raise some questions about how serious you are about your chosen speciality.

If you have any publications, add them in their own section starting with the least recent. It looks more professional if you put the citation but make sure your format is consistent (citation managers can do that for you. You should be using one if you do any academic reading/writing but if you don’t you can use http://www.citationmachine.net). You can also use the citation format for your unpublished manuscripts and add a note that they are submitted for publication (if they are).

Presentations would include those that are not part of required coursework. Put in the title and the event as well as the date and location. If you don’t have many, you can put them in the same heading as publications so it becomes “Publications and Presentations”

One last point about publications and presentations, if you have some that are in a different speciality than the one you are applying to, you’ll probably be asked about it in the interview so make sure you have a valid answer ready.

The following sections are optional. Add them if you feel they will add strength to your CV. If you feel you don’t have something to include in them, don’t feel that you have to just to fill the space.

Some people like to include a section for “Licenses and Certifications”. If all you have to add here is the SCFHS license and BLS, I honestly don’t see a need as everyone else would also have them so it’ll be a bit redundant. If you are licensed to work in another country or if you have more advanced certifications like ATLS if you are interested in surgery or orthodontic clear aligners if you are interested in ortho…etc, then those are worth adding. The certificates of attendance from conferences and workshops do not really qualify as certifications and should not be included here.

You can add a section for “Activities” which can include professional educational activities, research activities, extracurricular activities, volunteering…etc. You can also add professional memberships here if you want.

In regards to CE, I personally do not believe that you need to list every single lecture you attended. It gets long and A) no one will really read that list, B) if they don’t have a pattern or theme, it can make you look scattered. If you feel like you want to include them, it’s better to focus on the major ones, the hands-on courses and those related to your chosen speciality.

As for other activities/projects, if you have something that makes you stand out from the rest, write some details about it. If you were a class leader, member of student council, volunteered in a remote town, were part of a research team (if you didn’t include a section for research experience)…etc, add a couple of points about your role. e.g.: under a community project, you can type: Roles included procuring sponsors, designing educational materials and oral hygiene instructions booth.

I know many CV guides also includes sections for “Skills” and “Hobbies” but I generally don’t believe these need to be included unless they will really add something. The way I see it, “Skills” that would make you a good dentist are skills that should apply to all of us. To be good dentists, we all need to show independence, leadership qualities, problem solving abilities, the ability to collaborate and communicate…etc. As for “Hobbies”, these can be a bit tricky. Whatever you add here, you’ll probably be asked about in an interview. You want to make sure that you can provide an interesting answer that makes you memorable. For example if you like photography and you have photographed some events or participated in an exhibit, then sure, you can add it, if you want, but putting in cliches like sports, reading and traveling can actually have an unfavorable effect.

Some people like to include a “References” section at the end of the CV. I, personally, do not believe that it should be added because some referees do not prefer to have their contact info widely distributed and another thing is what if you submit your CV and then when time comes for consideration, you have someone else in mind to be your referee? What I suggest doing is having a separate sheet that has the same theme as your CV with your chosen referees and you can submit that page when it is requested from you.

STEP 4 (TEST & ADJUST)

Mabrook, now you have your first CV but before you send it out, you should put it through some tests first. I like to print it and see how it looks on paper. Sometimes you’d be working on a computer and everything looks great but then once printed, you get surprised by how big or small the font is or how your margins get cut off. If you have lots of color or a background, I would also photocopy it and see how it looks (that might be how the person who is in charge of selection would see it and if he/she can’t read it, they’ll probably just put it to the side and move on to the next one).

Another test is by giving it to people who can critique it. We all have loved ones who would tell us that whatever we make is perfect and although these people are nice, they are not the ones you should ask. Find someone who can be honest with you. It’s better to detect a problem and fix it rather than send it out thinking everything is great when it isn’t.

STEP 5 (OUTPUT)

When you’re all done and ready to go, it’s time to get your CV ready for sending. PDF is the best format to use. That way everything stays the way you meant for it to be. If you are sending it to the US, save it in “US letter” size. The reason for that is if they try to print it and it’s in A4 size, the text might be cut off as the letter size is a bit shorter and another thing is that some printers will not print if the size is different than the paper and trust me, not all people will try to figure it out so your CV may not be included. When you name the PDF file, include your name and CV. Don’t name it “my_CV”, “CV_1”, “untitled3”…etc. Imagine someone who is receiving many applications and when they download them, they might put them in the same folder. You want them to be able to find yours quickly. It goes without saying that the CV should be updated regularly. As you gain more things to add, you may see that some things are no longer important and you may decide to exclude them.

These few months are very exciting and/or terrifying to many young dentists. Some have just graduated from dental schools, others are wrapping up their internships. Many have lots of things going on – applying for jobs or postgraduate studies with all the stress and paperwork that goes with that. Topping the list of requirements for any of these pursuits is the curriculum vitae (CV).

The term CV is sometimes used interchangeably with the term “resume” and although they do have some similarities, a resume is much more brief and focuses only on key information. CVs are usually required for job applications and postgraduate training. They can be many pages long but as it has been shown that recruiters spend very little time looking at CVs, it is wise to keep the information focused and to the point.

In this post, I wanted to share some tips that can help you in creating your own.

STEP 1 (PREPARATION):

The first step would be to make an outline of the segments you plan to put in. It doesn’t need to be in perfect order from the start as it can be modified as needed. You can use pen and paper or any text processing application. Whenever I am creating an outline, I personally prefer to use outlining apps such as workflowy (www.workflowy.com) as they allow me to focus on each section by itself and re-organize my structure as I go.

There is no specific rule regarding the structure and sections of a basic CV but you will generally need sections for your personal information, education, experiences (this would include clinical, research, teaching…etc), activities (presentations, volunteering…etc). Other optional parts include personal statement, skills, hobbies…etc. These can be modified according to the purpose of your CV. For example, if you are applying to a specific position, a personal statement might be redundant especially if you are also attaching a statement of purpose and/or an assay. If you are applying for a program that requires you to pass certain tests, you may want to add a section for the test results so that they are in one clear place.

STEP 2 (LAYOUT)

Again, there is no exact rule concerning the layout of a CV document. If you look at samples, you may see a wide range from very basic to elaborate ones with different colors or designs. You would want your CV to look special and eye catching but at the same time, you may want to stay away from the more trendy designs. Unless you know the people that you are submitting to closely, you wouldn’t know what their opinion would be so it’s safer to stick to the classical styles.

There are many ways that a CV can be laid out. One way is to modify a ready made template. These templates can be found online or in word processors like Microsoft Word and Apple Pages. I find that templates are good if you want to have something ready quickly but they can be a bit tricky to expand and modify as the years go.

I’ll show you the way I have mine done. It’s simple and I have been using it for years. I just update it and adjust it as needed. I’m an apple user so I usually use Pages but the same can be done in Microsoft Word. In order to keep everything organized, I use invisible tables. These help me make sure than everything is lined up perfectly and it makes it easier to control the sections. The images show my CV with the borders visible and how it actually looks after the borders are made invisible. I copied some items in word to show how it can be done, as well.

I can also easily move sections up or down or add items without affecting the remaining parts too much. For example, when I was applying for residency, I had my experiences first followed by my education. At that time, I had done my internship and I was working as a resident in the hospital. I wanted to give that part more focus than my education as I had that advantage over someone who just graduated. When I graduated from residency and passed my boards, I moved education up on my CV and I put my current position in the header as at this point of my career, I feel that they give me more advantage. When I get promoted inshallah, I’ll probably bring the experience back up again. Having tables allows me to do this very easily by just dragging and dropping the whole row without changing the formatting.

Another trick I use to help me stay consistent is using styles. In many times, when a person is not careful, the style or font of later edits might be different. Sometimes the changes are subtle but when they are seen, they show that this person is not meticulous and doesn’t pay much attention to detail.

Before I start adding the info, I start defining my styles (this works for any document or presentation as well). I just type the text that I want, change the font and the style of it then use that to define a new section (Just click the (+) in pages and then change the name. In word, open the styles pane then click on the current style and choose new style). For example, I have the section titles in a green font while I have locations in a gray italic font. Once I have my styles set, I use them to create an item then I usually copy and paste that item into the next segment and just change the text while maintaining the formatting.

The advantage of using styles is that if you want to change the style of a certain thing in the future (change the font or color…etc), all you will need to do is update the style and it will automatically get updated across the document which will minimize errors and save you time.

Here I changed the color to pink and if I press “update”, all the sections which have the same style, will be changed as well.

One final note about styles, in general, WHAT you did is more important that WHERE and WHEN so I prefer to give it more emphasis so that it’s what jumps out to the viewer when they are skimming.

Once you have your outline and your layout, you’ll be almost halfway done. All you’ll need to do next is fill the info and prepare it for submission. You’ll learn more about this in PART II.

Abstract

Special Care Dentistry (SCD) is an unrecognised speciality in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and it is not currently taught as a major part of undergraduate or postgraduate dental curricular. The number of people with special needs is expected to increase based on the presence of many risk factors. For instance, the government is facing a rising burden of road traffic injuries as a result of rapid changes in behaviours. Therefore, more survivors are expected who might live using wheelchairs or with permanent physical impairments. Additionally, the elderly population of Saudi Arabia is expected to grow from 1 million in 2000 to 7.7 million in 2050. Improvements in paediatric health care in Saudi Arabia are expected to increase the number of people living with chronic or debilitating medical conditions. Thereby, dental care providers must anticipate patients with chronic medical conditions and/or wheelchair users in their daily practice. Implementation of SCD in the undergraduate and postgraduate dental programmes in Saudi dental universities will help oral health care providers to manage these patients and involve them in the health care pathway.
