Getting NBDE is not mandatory to be accepted in American Universities, however, it is recommended for some specialties such as Ortho, Pedo, and OMFS. If you are applying to this these programs you might increase you chances by taking the exam. AGD programs sometimes recommend it.
Some people might, as I did, start by a nonclinical degree in the USA. Then, take the NBDE and apply for clinical while in the US. Although some may consider it risky, it is a good place to start when applying to these competitive programs.
