arrow.gif Glass ionomer is relatively brittle and should not be expected to withstand heavy lateral stresses. That means it is not ideal for rebuilding a marginal ridge or incisal corner. Use as a fissure sealant for small occlusal restorations, cervical restorations, a proximal restoration on an anterior tooth, or for root surface lesions.

arrow.gif Glass-ionomer cement will not survive well in the presence of serious xerostomia. Use it as a base but keep it fully covered and protected by resin composite.

arrow.gif When the occlusal load is high, use glass ionomer as a base and laminate it with resin composite, amalgam, or gold.
