The level of measurement refers to the relationship among the values that are assigned to the attributes for a variable.
There are typically four levels of measurement that are defined:
  • Nominal
  • Ordinal
  • Interval
  • Ratio
It is important to recognize that there is a hierarchy implied in the level of measurement concept. Nominal variables provides the weakest and least information, followed by ordinal, then interval, and then ratio variable which provides the highest level of rich information.
