SenTube | Another Promising Oral Health Education Channel

It is a very positive sign that young dentists in Saudi Arabia start to play an important role in community oral health education increasing the public awareness about several oral health issues utilizing current methods and techniques such as social networking and youtube. SenTube is a new dental channel on YouTube with more than 3000 subscribers and more than 130000 views. The channel has two episodes, the 1st one is about Halitosis and the 2nd episode is about a very important topic which is Head & Neck Cancer. At SaudiDent.com we feel proud of the outstanding team members behind the channel, and we wish them the best of luck.

Interview | Effect of Various Provisional Prosthodontic Materials on the Polymerization of Elastomeric Impression Materials.

Within the activities of King Saud University 14th International Dental Conference -The 23rd for the Saudi Dental Society, held in Riyadh international exhibition center, From 6 February and lasted for three days. Scientific Posters were presented by group of doctors and students from all Saudi dental schools .One of the posters done by a group of interns from King Saud University entitled: Effect of Various Provisional Prosthodontic Materials on the Polymerization of Elastomeric Impression Materials. By Dr. Saad AlResays, Dr. Hussain AlSayed and Dr. Faris Jamjom under supervision of Dr. Zeyad Alsowygh Assistant Professor in the department of Prosthodontics in KSU.

Dr. Hussain AlSayed at first told us about the idea of the poster, he said: from the beginning we were hoping to present in the conference but for the lack of time we participated in the posters presentations, and it is a nice opportunity to gain the experience from our participation.

*As we know that such a research need time, how did you come to such an achievement in short period of time especially for someone who is starting his professional practice and research field?

Setting our priorities and making a timetable for every step helped us to achieve our goal and of course the key for every success is the teamwork and I would like to thank Dr. Zeyad, Dr. Saad and Dr.Faris who I had the honor to work with them.

*Tell us about the poster idea?

The idea is raising the question: Does the provisional prosthodontic materials effect the polymerization of the elastomeric impression materials that we use in dentistry? By detecting the effect of six different provisional materials on setting of six different elastomeric impression materials.

*Who noticed this effect?

Actually, Dr.Zeyad notices this incident in his work that one day there was an un-set impression material and from that observation we did this study.

*Does anyone report this effect before?

Until now, no reports up to date showed the polymerization inhibition after direct and/or indirect contact to provisional prosthodontic restorations, it is documented with the latex, glass ionomer and retraction cords.

*How can we overcome this problem in the clinic?

The solution is to decontaminate the “x” ingredient that causes this inhibition by the using: hydrogen peroxide 3% or pumice with low speed, other methods like water rinsing and Chlorhexidine didn’t show any cleansing effect. The 2nd solution is to take the final impression before doing or relining the provisional restoration. The 3rd solution is to use polyether impression material which was the only one showed –ve result.

*In which way this discovery would help the dental world?

This research will help to save dentist’s time, cost and effort during dental practice and to provide the best treatment for the patients. In fact one of the speakers in the conference Dr. Klaus J. Wiedhahn – president of the international society of computerized dentistry – when he looked at this poster told me that “this research might be one of the many evidences that will support the change for digital impression” and he asked me to communicate with him about the research.

Frederick S. McKay, Margaret Cammack Smith, and Howard V. Smith were the scientists who believed that “something in the water” was discoloring teeth of people in certain locales.’ They showed that the “something” was an excess of fluorine, which in some way caused a disturbance in the enamel mineralization process during amelogenesis. The disturbance was termed “mottling” and the pathologic process called “fluorosis.” They also observed that affected teeth were highly resistant to development of dental caries. The work of McKay and the Smiths in solving the mystery of “Colorado Brown Stain” led the way for all subsequent fluoride research. (Source: JOURNAL OF ESTHETIC DENTISTRY , VOLUME 10. NUMBER 1)

By definition Enamel fluorosis is a demineralization of the dental enamel caused by excessive ingestion of fluoride during the years of tooth calcification. Its appearance can range from very mild (barely noticeable whitish striations on only portions of the teeth) to very severe (heavy stains with pitting on all surfaces of teeth).

United Hands is a group of future dentists (Dental Students from King Abdulaziz University, Faculty of Dentistry) who has recently produced a nice and promising video for oral health education purposes. The video talks about Dental Caries, and how it is a big issue in Saudi Arabic affecting more than 90% of the population.
