His Excellency Dr. Bakri Assas, rector of Umm Al-Qura University has signed a research contract to establish a Center of Evidence-Based Dentistry.

The collaboration will primarily involve collaborative research projects between Umm Al-Qura University and a team of international researchers with expertise in evidence-based dentistry led by Professor Mohit Bhandari from McMaster University, Canada. Professor Bhandari is an associate member of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, McMaster University and a world-authority in evidence-based clinical practice, who has published several hundred publications.

Evidence-based dentistry, defined by the American Dental Association, is an approach to oral healthcare that requires the judicious integration of systematic assessments of clinically relevant scientific evidence, relating to the patient’s oral and medical condition and history, with the dentist’s clinical expertise and the patient’s treatment needs and preferences. Evidence-based dentistry will be an integral part of the UQUDENT undergraduate curriculum which has been recently developed in collaboration with Tufts University, Boston, USA.  The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association mandates the utilization of evidence-based dentistry as one of its standards for accreditation.

The research collaboration will involve in addition to collaborative research projects, faculty development courses and activities tailored towards the dental community.

The contract signing was attended by Umm Al-Qura University Vice President for Business and Innovation Dr. Nabeel Koshak, Faculty of Dentistry Dean Dr. Mohammad Beyari and Vice Dean for Academic Development and Community Service Dr. Sohail Bajammal.
